RUST FOR GLORY
Musician Pub 12th October 2024
Back at The Musician Pub for a glorious Saturday night listening to the superb Rust For Glory - Neil Young Tribute Band
With a back catalogue as extensive and magnificent as Neil Youngs, it is difficult to select a set list, you are sure to miss out someone's favourite... but I cant imagine what could be left out of this set to accommodate anything different... basically every song was a sure fire gem
They kicked off with a powerful "Hey Hey My My" which led into a tremendous version of "Powderfinger"... Alex Curtis (Neil Young) delivering spot-on vocals and playing some feisty guitar while Phil Jackson was playing fluent wonderful guitar lines... in the engine room bass player John Russell thundered away and Nick Brown powered away on the drums.. playing fluently and powerfully without any unnecessary histrionics.
The set continued with some classic fair from the early part of Neils career including "Cinnamon Girl" and "The Loner". A few more songs along came one of my favourite Young numbers, "Down By the River"
A couple more songs and the band left the stage for two solo acoustic pieces, the exquisite "Helpless" and another favourite "The Needle and the Damage Done" (which dont appear on the set list!!)
The band returned to the stage to accompany Alex, still on acoustic guitar, on more slightly more subdued numbers before building up the power and momentum to an outstanding version of "Cortez" followed by "Roll A Number" followed by a totally blistering powerhouse of a performance of "Like a Hurricane" which left the audience fairly overwhelmed...
How do you follow that... the usual closer, the band did it with a magnificently rocking rendition "Rockin' in the Free World" complete with the climax of strings being ripped out and the guitar being battered... so ended around 2-1/4 hours unbroken of Neil Young classics delivered by an outstandingly great band at the top of the game.
These guys are 4 superb musicians celebrating the music of the great Neil Young... they do it with energy, authenticity, great power and no shortage of brilliance... absolutely superb show.
Keep music live... keep music real... support your local venues
