Sorrel Nation/Robbie Cavanagh

SORREL NATION/ROBBIE CAVANAGH
Musician Pub 20th October 2024

Two new names to me at The Musician Pub last night, and they made a really fabulous evening!
First up was Robbie Cavanagh. Robbie is a first class singer/songwriter, accompanying himself with acoustic guitar. His set concentrated mainly on his recent album, and the songs are all excellent... and beautifully delivered. He has a great warm voice and is equally comfortable whether soft and crooning or belting out more strongly, and his guitar playing is quite individual and really excellent.
Robbie also has a fine stage presence, an easy relaxed manner and good chat between songs. This was a hugely accomplished set by a really fine artist... quality performance by a quality artist. loved it!

Headlining was Sorrel Nation playing her first tour with the full band... and what a revelation this was...
The band are superb... featuring an upright bass and cello which add a beautiful depth and texture to the music and a drummer who plays subtly without histrionics and complements the music perfectly. At the front are keyboards which both add to the depth and texture and play some lovely intricate patterns. The guitar player, whether playing electric, slide or acoustic, is terrific, at times sounding really country and at other times rocking.
The band play a hybrid mix of music, going into folk, pop and rock and doing them all to perfection. The set was also beautifully paced to keep it at all times fresh and hugely enjoyable
Sorrell herself writes wonderful songs and has a dream of a beautiful voice... a great singer singing at all times with great depth and feeling whether singing soft and soothing or rocking out. Her voice is instantly captivating and warm and the whole performance is haunting and beautiful. She also has a warm enchanting stage presence and the feeling generated by Sorrel and her band is a delight.
Although the set was virtually all of Sorrel's lovely songs she did put in one cover... maybe the best cover version of Sandy's "Who Knows Where the Time Goes" i've heard (and i've heard a lot of covers!) accompanied purely by the guitar player on acoustic guitar...
Sorrel a real talent, and with her first class band delivered a truly fabulous performance... absolutely loved it.
Keep music live... keep music real... support your local venues
