Juliet Lloyd

JULIET LLOYD
IMV 27th April 2026

A low key but enjoyable gig at The International Music Venue last night with Juliet Lloyd and her band.

Juliet is in the country from the USA for a short tour with her band, featuring bass, drums and guitar while she sings and plays keyboard. Very much a singer/songwriter performing a set of her own material. Juliet has a fine voice and writes some very good songs, and the band played beautifully throughout.
As a performer she has great charm and an easy relaxed style, the music is country styled and at the pop music end of that scale in style but for me, sadly there was nothing new or to lift it above countless other bands...
I enjoyed the evening, but it was a pleasant show, nothing outstanding sadly

Storm Theives/Andy Griffiths

STORM THIEVES/ANDY GRIFFITHS
IMV 12th April 2026

I love a sunday afternoon relaxing in the The International Music Venue listening to great music and last sunday was as good as it gets
Opening the show was brilliant local singer/songwriter Andy Griffiths who treated us to a really beautiful set of his own songs.
Andy is a fine singer and guitar player and writes some really great material covering a range of topics, though as he says, rarely a love song. He has an easy charm and warmth which shines through with both his songs and stage presence which keeps the audience engaged and delighted throughout.
To end the set Andy offered a choice either a 9-minute seafaring drama or a shorter less depressing piece... i would have loved the seafaring drama (a song i always love when he plays it) but his choice of "Last Orders" proved a perfect conclusion to what had been a marvellous and hugely enjoyable set... quality from the beginning to the end!!

Headlining were the STORM THIEVES, re-uniting after a space of 12 years... The band are Chris Conway playing keyboard, 12-string guitar, flute, whistle and kalimba, Dan Britton on guitar & bodhran and Dave Everitt on guitar... 3 superb singers and musicians blending together to make a great and unique band. On this occasion ably assisted by the excellent Neil Rabjohn on cahon and percussion.
The band are really undefinable, you may expect such a line-up may fall into a bit of a CSN sound, but they are far from it. Three guys who have played together in different combinations for ages, but who all have different musical backgrounds, showing clear influences of celtic, jazz and classical
Each of the band has a series of their own songs in the bands back catalogue and they take it in turn to play one of their own songs with the others accompanying. All three write superb and very different songs which in part accounts for the great variety within the set..
Chris shows his versatility playing a range of instruments throughout the set, and his songs in this context often had a slightly harder edge than you would expect from his solo work, but maintain a strong jazz influence.
Dan's music has a more celtic strain, his guitar work always rhythmic and strong while Dave has a distinctly classical strain to his playing.
I know the talents of Chris and Dan from their solo work, duo and band collaborations and their quality needs no introduction. It was however, the first time i'd seen Dave play and i found his finger picking absolutely beautiful and riveting throughout.. his songs also tended more to the poetic and were outstanding.
The Storm Thieves delivered a simply wonderful and inspiring set.. the musicians clearly in complete empathy together and loving the experience of being together again.
Impossible to pick out highlights, the whole set was outstanding and totally uplifting, and they ended on an instrumental improvisiton showing the musical prowess of each of them.. the piece bounded along wonderfully and gave Chris the opportunity to play keyboard, guitar, flute, two whistles simultaneously and kalimba during a single improvised number.
Absolutely superb performance from beginning to end and a total joy and privilege to have been there to see it

Blues Irregulars/Andy Wales Band

BLUES IRREGULARS/ANDY WALES BAND
IMV 11TH April 2026

Saturday night at the The International Music Venue gave us a double dose of rock and blues, and a great night it was...
First up was the Andy Wales with his superb band... Andy's music is clearly evolving and the emphasis appears to have slid away from the blues towards rock... They kicked off with an original instrumental piece which skittered around gloriously before going into the rest of the set, which as ever contained some originals, some blues pieces and some covers, including the familiar "Tainted Love" and a surprising "Down in the Tubestation at Midnight"
Throughout the set Andy demonstrated ably why he is seen as one of the very best guitar players around... whether playing delicately melodically, rocking out or playing bluesy he is spot on... a great guitar player on top of his game.
Andy is superbly aided by one of the best bass players around, CHRISTIAN DEZELU, who plays full tilt bass and is a total bundle of energy and the the great Nick Murphy. on drums. Christian and Nick set a solid powerful basis for Andy's superb guitar... a really class band!
One small point though... for me the set lost some of its impact by Andy's vocals being way too low in the mix, at times barely audible... Andy is a great singer and should be heard!

Following Andy's great set came the The Blues Irregulars, a band I hadnt seen since their days of the residency at the Salmon... but after line up changes this is a new band... and a hell of a good band.
Led by PJ Baker on guitar, harp and vocals and surrounded by a great bunch of musicians... Tony Alles on guitar, Nick Whitfield on bass, Matt Lacey on Drums and Andy Price on keyboards... 5 great musicians blending together into a really great whole unit.
The set was all blues, from the very familiar to some very obscure (to me at least) deep cuts... but each one played in great style.
Throughout the set Tony's guitar sound was superb and his playing top class... Nick and Matt drove the band with their high quality bass and drum playing powering along while Andy's keyboard work was absolutely superb.
PJ himself played guitar and harp, and all the vocals... and proved to be a quality band leader and musician.
For me the set started disappointingly, it took a few pieces to get me totally engrossed, but i was enjoying the show more and more as the set developed and built up... by the time they came to the final stages the band were absolutely flying and a superb sound it was!!... they ended with the familiar "Got my Mojo Working" on which PJ really blew up a storm on harp and the band powered along with him to make a quite scintillating conclusion... overall a terrific set by a top class band, a set which built and built beautiffully throughout...
However... the quality of the harp playing in the latter part of the set made me wish that PJ had made more use of it during the set... he showed he is a great harp player!!
Wonderful night of music!!

Botheration

AUTUMN DAWN LEADER/STEVIE JONES & DEan SHELDRICK/KEVIN HEWICK
Duffys 9th April 2026

Another great Thursday night in Duffy's Bar brought together by Kevin Hewick in the form of the latest "Botheration" session

As always Kevin kicked things off with a fine set... as he suggested, unprepared and seeming somewhat shambolic but as soon as he starts to play and sing the shambles is gone and he delivers his always great songs with power and conviction... while playing equally strong guitar...
The man is a legend and one of the major figures on the local scene... and as always his set was a cracker.

Sadly at the end of his set I had to nip out to deal with something, and consequently missed the following set, "Clouds" but heard some very positive comments about it once back...
So next up was the excellent Stevie Jones, ably assisted by Dean Sheldrick. Stevie is beyond doubt one of the best singer songwriters around writing fine songs and singing in a warm relaxed style, tonight featuring a few songs from the excellent "Getting There" album as well as some older pieces and one cover (not a song i knew). As well as Stevie, Dean plays electric guitar and adds some beautiful lines to Stevie's songs, The duo clearly have a rapport and work perfectly together... a beautifully warm beautifully delivered set as always

Finally the unique and wonderful Autumn Dawn Leader, assisted by Tom on backing vocals. Autumn is a unique artist, writing superb, dark, angst ridden powerful songs which she brings to life with her superb voice and powerful performance, accompanying herself on keyboard or lyre with Tom adding some great vocals throughout the set.
Many of the songs were taken from the superb "Naked Truth" album, as well as (i think) a newer song about the historical figure Sir Thomas Montecute.
An ADL gig is something more than a gig... powerful prog goth delivered with a voice full of power and emotion which is totally compelling...
Another superb performance
