DRUGSTORE COWBOYS
Donkey Venue 18th October 2024
Last night was a rather special one at The Donkey Venue... the last performance there (most likely!) for the Drugstore cowboys. A warm party feeling in the room from the doors opening... a great crowd of lovely people there to celebrate 20 years of Drugstore Cowboy gigs at the venue and to have a good time...
Once the band hit the stage you just cant help having a good time... As ever the band hit the stage running and built up the momentum throughout delivering a scorching set of rockabilly/rock'n'roll
Nick must have the most diverse, intriguing and exciting repertoire of anyone, pulling in material from a host of sources, some more likely than others for a rockabilly outfit... but every one given the full Nick Whitfield treatment... hard to pick standouts as every song was a total banger... if pushed i think i would go with "20th Century Boy" "Paint it, Black" and "Rhinestone/Drugstore Cowboy" as favourites...
Nick is ably supported by the band, Sam French on upright bass which pumps away superbly with a cracking beat which you can feel through the floor and Damon Claridge on drums. who hits the drums crisply and drives a ferocious beat for whole show.
As this was a party night there were a few guests got up up play, the first being Sid - a most unlikely addition playing flute on "Googoo Muck" and "Wonderous Place"... but it was absolutely magical!!
Next up was Graham Bullous with a fabulous touch of the Tom Waits'... then followed by the legend that is Gaz Birtles to sing a few...
This was an awesome night of music played in an uplifting atmosphere... and just no doubt... the band totally smashed it.. absolutely superb performance... superb uplifting gig...
