PAUL WALKER & KAREN PFEIFFER
Musician Pub 13th October 2024
So onto The Musician Pub for the 5th gig in 4 days... Sunday evening brought the return of the wonderful Paul Walker and Karen Pfeiffer
The set was, as always, a perfect blend or original songs and covers, as well as a lovely mix of familiar favourites and new material... and every new piece soon felt like an old friend.
Among the familiar pieces we heard "The L&N Dont Stop Here Anymore", "Our Golden Age", the beautiful "What if my Pockets Were Empty" and one of my particular favourites "The Ballad of the Queen of May"... apparently a light hearted murder ballad!
It's impossible really to pick out highlights really... these are just a sample, the other songs were all equally outstanding but i cant list them all!!
Early in the second half Karen picked up a radio microphone as Paul played the opening bars of Joan Baez' "Diamond and Rust"... a song that resonates with me on so many levels, but Karens heartfelt gorgeous performance was as always breathtakingly beautiful.. sitting. in part of the song, on the edge of stage and bringing many a tear to many an eye.
Something of a surprise came in the form of an intense powerful song, from I believe the 1970's, which as Paul said still has the same, if not more, poignancy now, "The Mine, about standing on a land mine, which was sung superbly by Paul.
The final song, of course, was the irreplaceable "Auf Weidersehen Me Duck" which will always ensure heartsw a re lifted and bring smiles to all.
Overall, Paul plays really great guitar and sings, whether lead or harmony, beautifully... and Karen has the most beautiful amazing voice... and the two blend together perfectly, the harmonies always spot on.
The warmth and charm of this wonderful couple, and their rapport with the audience makes you feel they are sitting in your living room singing just for you and maybe a couple of friends... i don't think it would be possible to leave a show without feeling a warm positive glow and totally uplifted...
Talking with others after the show, the words being used were "Class" Beautiful" "Quality"... and yes, this was another truly outstanding performance by arguably the most lovely couple on the circuit... beautiful music played by the most lovely people...
OK... i confess... i totally love Paul and Karen... simply wonderful!!!
