BLACKHEART ORCHESTRA/OLGA DIKAJEE
Musician Pub: 6th October 2024
The Musician Pub hosted the return of the Blackheart Orchestra on Sunday after a fairly long absence and despite the greyness of the day they attracted a large audience, all of who seemed to know every word of every song!!...
However, first things first, support act was singer/songwriter Olga Dikajee.. a new name to me. Olga has a truly stunning voice, and sings beautifully in an almost classical style, and is an equally accomplished pianist. Her beautiful and sad songs weave myth legend and nature in a beautiful way.
Olga has a warm enchanting stage presence, almost at odds with her material, and connects beautifully with the audience throughout...a really beautiful set which i could have listened to for much longer... superb.
Then the headliners.. the Blackheart Orchestra. I'd heard so many great things about the band that i was really keen to catch up with them.
They are a duo, and the music is lush, sweeping and very orchestral. The banks of keyboards deliver strong melody and lush layers of ethereal texture, along with some superb bass and guitar work, which wrap around the band and audience alike... hard to describe but maybe elements of Pink Floyd immediately post Syd's departure, and maybe the likes of Tangerine Dream (if anyone remembers them!) but augmented by the lovely voices and harmonies of Chrissy Mostyn & Rick Pilkingon. Chrissy's voice is strong and the two voices weave patterns around the music and suit it perfectly.
There is no doubting the talent in the band or the quality of the music, but for me, it didn't really touch me, for me the keyboards at times sounded harsh and robotic, until the last two pieces before the encores.. both of which i really enjoyed... but this was clearly a superb performance loved by the audience, who all seemed to know the music well
Superb show by two talented musicians... but sadly this one was not for me.
