Kenton Hall/Brett Richardson

KENTON HALL/BRETT RICHARDSON
Duffys Bar: 12th September 2024

Another splendid Thursday evening at the Soundhive at Duffy's Bar Opening up was a new name to me, BRETT RICHARDSON... not exactly what I expected to hear, but hugely enjoyable. Brett introduced himself by saying he aimed to make the audience laugh and cry... and he made a really good go at it!
I am a huge lover of Jake Thackeray, but you seldom hear his songs covered... Brett gave us three Thackeray covers (though "Sister Josephine" is by Georges Brassens, translated by Jake) and he made a good job of all three, though it is albut impossible to replicate Jakes delivery... he also ventured into the Jasper Carrott song book... In between tines he gave us some serious and touching songs, which he delivered with style.
This was a " last minute" gig for Brett and I thoroughly enjoyed it, though it was, perhaps inevitably a bit under-rehearsed... but none-the-less, hugely entertaining and enjoyable

The headliner was Kenton Hall, this time playing with a band, The Necessary Measures, which was Brett on bass electric and acoustic guitar and Flash on drums for the latter half of the set. I had seen Kenton here a few weeks ago, and for me this was a stronger perfromance.
Kenton is a hugely theatrical performer... he has powerful voice which he uses to the full, but can also be softer and more relaxed with equal qassurance He had the audience in his control from the first moment with the strength of his performance.
His songs are really great... powerful, often very personal statements but with room for humour as well.. He also gave us a couple of upbeat sing-a-longs... whichg drew a tremendous audience participation.
Between songs Kentons banter is always strong and worth hearing.. . either comic or deep and personal... sometimes the two together.
A really powerful and outstanding performance... really enjoyed everything about it
Finally.. .huge thanks to Chris Ilett for putting these free gigs on featuring some great local musicians... just gutted i am not able to get tot he next one!!
Keep music live... keep music real... support your local venues
