FIVE POINT GANG/JACEK POLANSKI
Musician Pub 10th November 2023
The evening started off with a debut performance by Jacek Polanski... he described his music as being "soft blues"... which i guess it was but that doesn't really do it justice. He opened his set with a small section of music played on a Northern American Indian native flute which he got in California after meeting a Native American in California, and a beautiful sound it was indeed.
Jacek plays relaxed finger picking blues guitar, after the school of Mississippi John Hurt, and plays it extremely well.
He had said beforehand he was a bit tense/nervous, and at times it showed.. .but his performance showed he has nothing to be nervous about... he was excellent and I loved his set.
The repertoire was a lovely selection of blues classics, played in that relaxed gentle way, and it was really refreshing to hear many of them played this way rather than the routine rock arrangements. He did however, leave the best til last with a couple of slide guitar pieces... his touch was light. delicate and lovely.
I guess Jacek was the calm before the storm... after the break we had the very welcome return of the absolutely awesome Five Points Gang. I've seen the band before so knew what to expect, but the explosive opening all but blew me off me seat...
The band play a mix of blues and rock... and if you like your blues/rock'n'roll loud powerful and exciting this is the band for you.
They play with massive passion, joy and more energy than you would get at a fully working power plant... the three musicians are all masters of their craft... brilliant musicians who spark off each other throughout and also build a great rapport with the audience and deliver a wonderful show... the power and quality of the music is outstanding and the front men, Joe Pearson (guitar/vocals) and Dinho Barral (bass/backing vocals) never stop moving...eccentrically swooping around the stage, Dinho especially dancing round in circles and leaping constantly... difficult to take your eyes off him... while at the back Tobias Andersson bounces throughout whilst driving the band with his powerful drumming.
The pieces are predominantly guitar led, but the bass and drums share equal billing throughout and both Dinho and Thanos delivered outstanding solos
In short... Five Points Gang are a superb band, one of the best live bands you will ever see and as ever delivered a hugely powerful superb set at the Musician on Friday night
