ALICE ARMSTRONG
Musician Pub 12th November 2023
Back to the The Musician Pub sunday afternoon for one of those lovely chill-out gigs... today to see Alice Armstrong
Wow!!!
this was no ordinary gig... this was special. Alice has a stunning voice and is a wonderful singer. Hard to categorise, soulful blues with a touch of Jazz... he main influence is Aretha Franklin, but there are elements of such diverse talents as Janis Joplin, Amy Winehouse, Cass Elliot and Ella Fitzgerald.
She can sing soft and sweet and belt it out at full throttle and all points in between... and it is beautiful at every point.
Alice is a real character.. has masses of charisma and a really warm person and has an admirable rapport with her band and the audience... as well as a lovable raunchy side!...
This woman is simply magnificent... sings wonderful songs, mainly original, with one of the greatest voices you will hear.
Highlights for me were the three she sang right at the beginning of the second set... "Born to Sing the Blues" which is a full blooded belter, an Aretha cover "Rock Steady" and a beautiful gentle song about being unable to write love songs "Love Song" which she performed with just a keyboard accompaniment.
What of the band... three superb musicians... Stevie Watts on Keys, Ollie Knight-Smith on guitar and Kev Hickman on drums... and they were simply magnificent... playing brilliantly without ever looking to come to the fore or dominate... they were incredibly tight and provided perfect support for Alices voice. The musicians all contributed excellent solos towards the end of the show, and all excelled. I have to single out Kevin, surely one of the most entertaining drummers and whoever he appears playing with he smiles and laughs throughout the show has has a great line in drums stick twiddling!
Alice should be a major star... her singing is absolutely superb and she puts everything of herself into every note... there are not enough superlatives...
It was a real privilege and delight to see this gig... thank you Alice
