This was an exceptional gig... serious contender for gig of the year and one of the all-time greats... the first date on this UK tour by finnish singer/guitarist Erja Lyytinen
The band, bass and drums, came on and kicked off the beat before Irja hit the stage, plugged her guitar in and launched into a blistering guitar piece.
The band were a superb support, the bass and drums never faltering in driving the music but also playing with real feel, subtlety and fire. Towards the end of the set we got a brilliant drum solo which had flare, rhythm and drama and was long enough to allow the player to shine and short enough to leave us wanting more...again towards the end the bass player delivered a superb, melodic rhythmic passage which was just wonderful.\
Throughout though, it was difficult not to concentrate solely on Irja... an absolutely magnificent guitar player, especially slide guitar... she is simply an outrageously brilliant player. The playing is frequently jet paced, yet melodic, rhythmic and totally exciting and engrossing.
Her singing is also strong, delivering the songs with passion and great joy
The whole performance is set off by Irja's hugely engaging stage persona... bouncing around, and grinning broadly for the bulk of the show.... a musician clearly loving what she does and whipping up a storm throughout...
This woman would blow most of the huge celebrity blues/rock guitar players away with ease... an absolute phenomenon...
