Andrea Kenny’s EP launch gig at the OMC started with a really fine set by Sam Tucker?. Sam appears to be a law unto himself…he has a strong clear voice and plays guitar accompanying himself perfectly. He is a very different, but great songwriter, no pretensions here, just fine songs about some very diverse subjects. He appears to play for fun, and his songs are hugely comic as well as at times thought provoking
After Sam, Sally Hossack stepped up with her band “The Dream Band”…
The harmony voices of Sally and Anita were just wonderful… the two acoustic guitars of Sally and Howard were delicate, melodic and tuneful, and perfect accompaniment to the harmonies. The overall sound was spellbinding and dreamlike… it had an eternal quality which lifts you out of the day to day of the world we live in.
Then finally… the main event.. Andrea Kenny’s set promoting the EP… and the set included all six tracks on the EP, one older piece, a new piece and two covers. This was clearly a huge moment for Andrea and she delivered it with massive assurance, confidence, and joy in a simply awesome performance…aided and abetted by a fabulous band who delivered everything you could want.
The focus of the performance was always going to be Andrea, her songs and her impassioned performance… but the band with her were superb… Robin and Jamie setting the beat and driving the music on bass and drums respectively, Helen’s keys and especially beautiful backing vocals adding layers of richness and some absolutely superb fiddle playing by Natasha completing a magical overall sound.
You can see any number of multi millionaire rock stars playing in arenas and stadia, but you will never hear music this original, powerful, raw, honest and glorious there. Andrea and the band are doing what they love, doing it brilliantly and clearly loving it… this is real.. real people delivering real quality original music.. and it is exciting!!
