COOL REKZ/PRETTY DIRTY RATS/PAUL ROBERTS
Firebug 22nd June 2024
First up was Paul Roberts who delivered a fine set of his original songs, many of which i suspect will be on his album due for release shortly. A very confident and positive performance, strident acoustic guitar and a clear strong voice, and a bunch of fine well crafted songs... Standout for me was "I'll play for 7 people like i'd play the NEC"... i'm sure a heartfelt comment, and indicative of audiences everywhere lately.
Next up were the band i think everyone was there for, Pretty Dirty Rats... a bit of humble pie here, last year i was critical of this band but last night they delivered a really terrific set... a massively assured, powerful and enjoyable set.
Driven along by fine pumping bass and drums... the permanent smile and sheer joy of the drummer is worth the admission alone!.
However the band is mainly about the guitar and vocals... The guitar playing fast, energetic and totally captivating, the vocals somewhat quirky but perfect for the band. A leader with real personality and presence... as well as a fine guitar player and writer.
High energy performance... great musicianship all around and a really great performance... i hope to see this band again before long... excellent!
Finally up came Cool Rekz... i believe this was the bands first gig of the year, but there were no obvious signs of a lay off as they delivered a great energetic set. No pretension, the band describe themselves as hobby band who enjoy getting up and playing... just a fine set of rock music, mainly original songs, but a couple of covers of Bowie (Jean Jeannie) and the Clash (Should I stay...)
