THE BREEZE/MOUNTAINTOP JUNKSHOP/PETER WYETH
Musician Pub 14th May 2024
This was an entertaining and laid back evening at the The Musician Pub
First up was singer/songwriter Peter Wyeth, playing I believe his first gig for a number of years and I fear he was affected by some nervousness... however he did deliver an entertaining and interesting set. His songs are good and at times quite quirky and his delivery good, singing and playing well.
Peter did use loops and electronics at times but sadly didnt seem to have a real command of the technology, struggling at times to get things set up right.. a shame as it didnt help the flow of the show. However, i am sure a few more gigs, and more confidence that brings (and maybe a bit more banter) and all will be well. As Peter said, it is a work in progress.
Secondly we had Mountaintop Junkshop. I confess to not enjoying the band previous time i saw them, but this was much better and very enjoyable.
The band play their own songs in a relaxed country tinged style, using keyboard, acoustic guitar and bass and featuring two vocalists... the smooth lovely voice of the keyboard player and the edgier style of the guitarist, which both sound good individually and blend together well. (Apologies.. i don't know any of their names!)
Although i enjoyed the set, they would, for me, benefit by introducing a bit more variety and energy as the overall effect is a bit too laid back for my taste
Headlining were visitors from Ireland, The Breeze. Impossible to categorize a genre... best i can offer is a laid back folk/country rock band.
The Band tend to alternate vocalists, with Stevie singing in a higher smooth style while Chris's vocals are more akin to Tom Waits, which gives a nice variety to the set.
Stevie plays great guitar, both electric and acoustic and the electric especially has a wonderful tone and feel... and he delivers the "breezier" type songs
On one song he used a violin bow and electonics to create some very different effects in the sound... the down side was breaking a string in the process, which left a space for Chris to deliver one of his own songs almost solo, which gave him a chance to show the softer tenderer side of his singing
Chris also plays great guitar and adds harmonica and clarinet on one piece... and on a couple of pieces towards the end he delivered some quality slide guitar .
The bass and drums are impeccable.. showing you don't need to thrash a drum kit to provide solid rhythm, and the two work together well to provide a solid rhythmic basis for the music.
The Breeze delivered a hugely enjoyable set of laid back rock/country/folk to conclude a very enjoyable evening
