KATHRYN WILLIAMS & WITHERED HAND
Musician Pub: 12th May 2024
At the The Musician Pub last night to see KATHRYN WILLIAMS & WITHERED HAND. Knowing that Kathryn is a fine singer I had been looking forward to this.
The evening started with a short solo set by Kathryn, which started with a rather beautiful acapella number. The quality of her voice was clear and she sang well.
Then came Withered Hand who also delivered a short enjoyable set
The second half was the duo playing and singing together, and there is a clear rapport between the musicians and they developed a rapport with the enthusiastic audience.
Both played guitar, switching between acoustic and electric, and Kathryn played one-handed mellotron on a few pieces.
Their voices blended well together, and the overall effect was very pleasant.
However, overall, i found the performance a disappointment... as I said above, the voices were pleasant, both solo and together, but nothing more, and I felt many of the songs appeared to be from the Janet and John song writing book.
The banter between songs was more like a private conversation between the musicians, and Kathryn made that point at one point, and to me was, for the most part, neither interesting nor amusing and gave a very unrehearsed unprofessional feel, as does the use of music stands.
There was nothing wrong with either the singing (both have good voices) or playing, but for me it felt very flat, bland and uninspiring... disappointing night
