Southern Frontier Country Band

SOUTHERN FRONTIER COUNTRY BAND
Queen of Bradgate August 18th 2023

This is a tricky gig to review objectively. The venue is a City Centre pub, and attracts a large crowd of younger drinkers on a friday night... no problem with that... and the drinkers seem to enjoy having music playing and the mixture works well. However as a venue to sit and listen to the band it is less successful.

Having said that, i have seen the band a number of times and know most of the songs which make it easier,.
So.. the performance... i find Southern Frontier Country Band get better and more assured every time i see them... and tonight they played really well... The band was playing well, with confidence, and at times Phil managed to make his guitar sound like a pedal steel... no idea how... but it worked!. Emma sings with great assurance and has a distinct country twang in her delivery and has developed a real character as a performer.
They are a covers band, and pick a great range of material, covering virtually all of the country bases, starting with Townes Van Zandt " Pancho and Lefty" which will always get me on side... from there the covers took in Johnny Cash, Emmylou, Hank Williams, Creedence Clearwater and surprisingly Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Sweet Home Alabama"... not strictly a country song but fitted in well with the set! They also delivered a fine "Country Roads", with must now be the country equivalent of Rock'n'Rolls Johnny B Goode as most covered song!... but it is a great song and excellently performed...
Overall, a very enjoyable evening and fine performance by the band
Keep music live... keep music real... support your local venue
