Code Switch Theory/Shotts/Dean Welch

CODE SWITCH THEORY/SHOTTS/DEAN WELCH
Musician Pub 6th December

An interesting an overall enjoyable night at The Musician Pub last night.
First up was a surprise, in that DEAN WELCH was not on the original bill, he had stepped in at the 11th hour, and he delivcered a fine set. He is a singer/songwriter, writin g soime pretty good songs, and adding in some interesting covers, from Blossoms, Arctic Monkeys & Kasabian... i didnt know any of them but believe they were from the lesser known end of the bands output.... and they all worked well.
Dean appears an assured performer with a fine voice accompanying himself on acoustic guitar. His guitar playing is strong and confident but, to be pedantic, was very similar for each song. That said this was a good opening set, which i really enjoyed.

Next up was the band, SHOTTS. I thought them a bit diffident at the beginning, but they soon hit their stride and delivered an excellent set. They play a lovely style of 80's/90's pop/rock with solid rhythm section of Frets on Bass and deputy drummer Tony with lovely jangly guitars up front.
Luke, on lead guitar has a really lovely guitar tone, influenced i believe by Stone Roses, which was i thought reminiscent of Barry Melton... whichever... he is a fine player. The other guitarist/singer (i'm sorry i didnt catch the name) uses a harsher tone and the two blend together beautifully.. The vocals are also strong and very good.
I'd not seen them before but they were excellent... it was no surprise to hear an Oasis cover in the set (Whats the Story Morning Glory) but it was a surprise to hear the Beatles "Hard Days Night" which i dont think i've heard covered before outside a Beatle tribute band.
Really enjoyed this quality set and hope to catch them again.

Headlining was CODE SWITCH THEORY... I'd see them as a duo before, and previously as a 4-piece but this time they were back to a duo.
At the start they said that this was to be more of an experience, and you may not like it!!.. .
The set starts with electronic noises and a news-style spoken backing track, which appeared to cover climate change, politics and yoga. I have no idea if the music was meant to reflect the commentary or vice versa, but to my ears there was no connection,
The music was very intense, but seemed also rambling and incoherent, and padded out by a great deal of electronic noises.
I felt both of the band are excellent musicians but this was just intense, incoherent and random... really didnt like it in any way
Highlight on the night by a country mile the excellent SHOTTS... go see them when you get a chance
Keep music live... keep music real... support your local venue
