Harri Georgio & Matt Bury/Lucy Bremridge/World Without Want

HARRI GIORGIO & MATT BURY/LUCY BREMRIDGE/WORLD WITHOUT WANT
Musician Pub 18th December 2024

The Musician Pub provided us an interesting and varied night of acoustic music last night... i always enjoy these evenings that Paul puts on, normally featuring 3 or 4 local bands/artists, many of whom are new to me..
Last night started with a band called WORLD WITHOUT WANT... They started with a solo pice by the keyboard player... a fairly intense and quite doleful number which he explained, in simple terms, he had rather messed up... he was then joined by a percusionist/guitarist to complete the band and apparently this was the first time they had played as a duo... and appeared to revel in the fact that they were unprepared and unrehearsed... it showed!... as they were playing just to their own followers in the audience, the "in" jokes were lost on the rest of us... The music was distinctly low key and, to me, dull.. though enlivened by "To the End"... a much more accessible song delivered in fine style by the guitar player. As they continued to talk about being unrehearsed, the keyboard player stood to play guitar on one song, and found he was directly in front of the percussionist... and wasn't about to move across..
I couldn't decide if the quips about being unrehearsed were meant to be jokes, but unrehearsed and not stage ready they were... final straw for me was. "work has been busy so i cant be bothered to play guitar on this one"... joke or fact i dont know, but it somehow summed them up... just didn't like this performance in any way... a shame because the solo song by the guitar player was pretty good, and i felt the keyboard man has a pretty good voice...

Next up was Lucy Bremridge who as always delivered a really high class performance... i've been lucky enough to see Lucy a number of times during the year, and last night was a revelation... always a quality performer with a great voice, she seemed to have grown hugely in assurance and confidence
Lucy's original songs are excellent... one or two pieces have a vaguely country feel, though Lucy is by no means a country singer, but all are hugely listenable and allow her to use her voice to it's potential, accompanying herself perfectly on acoustic guitar.
This was a really fine performance by a very talented performer... Lucy has a lovely expressive voice, plays good guitar and writes fine songs... as she gains experience I am sure she will go on to achieve great things... a quality set.

Headling was anothing act I hadn't heard of, HARRI GEORIO and MATT BURY.... they were flamboyantly introduced to a huge reception from their fans... i had no idea what to expect but didn't anticipate what we got... Matt playing terrific pumping guitar and Harri rapping out a lyric... my first thoughts were that this is way out of my comfort zone... this isn't for me... BUT... as the set progressed i was enjoying it more and more... Harri is a superb performer, engaging easily with the boisterous audience and delivering a hugely enjoyable performance.
The songs are all great, and Harri really has a great voice and diction, delivering the pieces whether rap-style or singing with assurance and ease... and when singing known songs, such as "Wade in the Water" (originally by the Ramsey Lewis Trio, but here based on the Eva Cassidy version) he showed he is actually a fine singer.
Full of life and energy, and accompanied in equal measure by Matt on guitar, Harri is an outstanding performer fully commanding the stage... despite initial reservations, i really enjoyed this performance... great stuff.
On a negative point... why do people go to gigs to talk all the way through the music... the noise of the chatter from the middle and back during the first two sets was appalling... at least in Harri's set it became part of the show with the banter with the audience being fun even to the uninitiated, .... and the volume of the performance drowning it during the numbers!!!
Keep music live... keep music real... support your local venues
