UFO Cult/Sheila Mosley/Chloe Bates/Kevin Hewick

UFO CULT/SHEILA MOSLEY/CHLOE BATES/KEIN HEWICK
Duffys 3rd September 2025

Out Wednesday for the delight of Botheration 5... and a really great night it was!!

Starting as always with the living legend that is Kevin Hewick... not much else to say about Kevin, hugely experienced and loved artist, delivering his high quality songs in his regular high quality way... with a bit of the obligatory amusing rambling thrown in!! Always a great addition to an evening

Second up, a new name to me... Chloƫ Bates... i understand more known for her work with a band, i believe this was only her third solo outing... and may there be many more... Chloe has a lovely voice and sings so well, predominantly her own excellent songs, and accompanies herself dextrously on acoustic guitar. There were signs of nervousness, but they didn't in any way hamper the quality of the performance or the artist. A lovely set by a top class artist

Following Chloe was the excellent Sheila Mosley... i like a huge range of music but my first loves remain folk music and the 1960's greenwich village troubadour tradition... and Sheila sits perfectly into this area... beautiful voice and singer Sheila delivers a range of songs from those genres, ranging form the strongly political social comment... especially her rivetting performance of Peggy Seeger's defence after an incident at Greenham Common... and the more gentle love songs and ballads. A lovely mix of high class mainly familiar material and as she did last sunday, had me groping for a tissue with her closing "Another Train"... a song that means so much...
Sheila is a no frills just top quality great performer.. totally committed and sincere in every aspect... if you dont know her work go see her when you can... superb!!

Closing the evening a relatively new outfit featuring some familiar faces... UFO Cult. They started gently some some of Chris's songs before kicking in as a band. Sophie referred to what they do as "a racket"... but in reality they showed themselves to be a very musical and enjoyable outfit, with some great material and great variety with the swapping around of instruments, and lead vocals. They only have i think 5 songs in their repertoire at present but they will certainly add more and are already a great addition to the Riotous Collective *. Loved their set
Cracking good evening

*UFO Cult are NOT actually part of the Riotous Collective... my error
On a separate note, great to finally meet and chat with Steve Rushin who i've know on line for ages but not previously in person!!
Keep music live... keep music real... support your local bands and venues
