DAVID WYATT BAND
IAC 23rd August 2025
So many people had told me I should see the David Wyatt Band, i wonder how I had missed them... so yesterday I went to the International Arts Centre to see them... having no idea what to expect.
On arrival I was disappointed to see the seating in rows and discouraged by the sight of a music stand and song book on stage... however...
Any sense of disappointment was removed when the band started the first song... there is so much to admire about this band.
Up front David Wyatt is a larger than life character, but more importantly has one of the best voices i've heard in a long while.... light and sweet and highly musical he has the ability to drift smoothly into falsetto or can sing out loud and rocking seemingly without effort... superb singing from start to finish.
Behind him, the rhythm section was immaculate... the drummer playing the drums with rhythm and style without the need to be flambouyant or thrash the kit... the bass powering along to perfection.
I think everyone knows that Andy Wales is a superb guitar player, absolutely as good as it gets. His playing throughout the show was absolutely suoerb, whether in the songs or in the snippets he unleashed in the banter between songs. His guitar sounding beautifully acoustic then powerfully electric as he ripped out some terrific solos, and some pretty fine slide work.
Overall the band was superb, totally together and ranging from light poppy sound through gentle and soothing to rocking out big style.. a terrific band clearly loving playing together and connecting with the audience.
However... for me David's USP, the shambolic "unprofessional" approach just did not connect and for me, detracted from the quality of the band and music they delivered... i know that is just David... but for me it was overdone, especially in the first set, and unappealing meaning I didn't enjoy the show as much as I should have.. however... i seemed to be in a minority of 1 in that as the band went down a storm!!
