SASKIA GRIFFITHS-MOORE/STEVE STRAWHEAD
Musician Pub 10th March 2024
From an early gig at the Donkey, onto the The Musician Pub for a truly delightful concert.
At the beginning Saskia went on to describe her excellent project about encouraging older songwriters... and first up was someone who came out of that program, a new name to me, Steve Strawhead.
Steve gave us a really great set... he has a lovely light warm voice and accompanies himself with some fine guitar playing. The songs, all Steve's original compositions, are excellent, and each one very different to the one before. He easily built a really nice rapport with the audience with his warm and entertaining patter and personality. There were signs maybe of nerves at times as he explained if he got a song wrong he would start again from the beginning as long as he hadn't sung more than 1/3 of the song... he did forget the lyrics in one song and handled it with aplomb, so that it didnt in any way detract.
After a short break, Saskia Griffiths-Moore took the stage for her set... and what a fabulous set it was!!. She delivered a few songs solo, and for the others was accompanied by Aaron Jones (my apologies if I have that name wrong) who played some really fine guitar, including a couple of beautiful solo passages.
Saskia has a simply stunning voice, which has been likened to Joan Baez (there is little higher praise than that) and sings beautifully. Her songs tend to be rather personal, several about friends, but all delightful.
From the beginning Saskia explained that after a recent interview she felt she would like to tell some stories about the songs... There is always a balance to be struck between the storytelling and the songs, and she got it exactly right... the stories informative and interesting and the songs and singing sublime.
This was a hugely assured and confident performance by a quality performer. As with Steve earlier, Saskia's warm personality shone through and judging by her smiles she was loving the performance as much as the audience were.
Absolutely riveting and beautiful performance.
This was a really lovely evening which truly warmed the heart.
