Matt Hodges Band/Luke Flear

MATT HODGES BAND/LUKE FLEAR
Musician Pub 11th March 2024

Well, this wasn't a gig that (hopefully) won't live long in the memory at the The Musician Pub
Two acts going out under the "Country Music" banner, and first up was LUKE FLEAR.
On the positive side, very confident and assured performance. However... the voice was fair the guitar playing was at all times strident and powerful but totally unvaried with no light and shade or hint of finesse... the keyboard playing on a couple of songs was equally heavy handed and plodding.
The whole set had look reminiscent of a 1980's Garth Brooks impersonation and not at all to my taste. The audience as a whole seemed to love it though, especially the fan club at the front... sorry guys... I really didnt!!

Following this was the MATT HODGES BAND who came with a good reputation so I expected much... sadly didnt get it.
The band worked hard, were musically competent and went down well with their fans... however, country? this was a fairly pedestrian rock band wearing big hats.
Through the set there were a couple of songs played, in part, almost solo by Matt, which had more interest.
I felt the guitar player was pretty good, and delivered some really fluent passages when there were spaces, but was i think under used.
The audience as a whole seemed to love it, and whooped and hollered all through being up dancing and shrieking by the end... just don't understand why the band were so well received!!
Totally underwhelming gig.
I don't understand how either of these acts qualify as country... a loud very ordinary solo act and a mundane rock band... there is more to country than wearing a big hat.
Hugely disappointing evening, but i guess the audience as a whole somehow enjoyed it... i really didnt enjoy it at all
Not acts I will be going to see again...
Keep music live... keep music real... support your local venues
