SALLY BARKER & KEITH RICHARD BUCK
Musician Pub 12th January 2024
Tonights gig at The Musician Pub was Sally Barker playing in a duo with Keith Richard Buck
Sally said this was their first gig of the year and she feared being rusty and talkative... and so it started.
However, the set started with an old classic song "Elephants" and the voice was clear and beautiful as ever and Keith's guitar accompaniment spot on. The first couple of songs were separated by a fair amount of banter and reminscence between the musicians which was endearing but did point to Sally being talkative as she suggested. However... the the set continued smoothly with a fair sprinkling of old familiar songs and new material. including a song so new, "Carolina Moon" which is yet to be completed. Other highlights were other oldS favourite, "We build fires" and a cover of "Walking in Memphis" which she had sung on the Voice 10 years ago.
I hadn't seen the pair work together before, but they fit perfectly as a duo... Sally has a remarkably lovely voice and uses it perfectly singing beautifully throughout while Richard's guitar playing was superb. He also added some wonderful pedal steel to a fair few numbers.
There was a real warmth and connection between the performers and between the performers and audience which, along with the lovely music, created the lovely atmosphere in the room.
The second half started with a very impromptu performance... they delivered a performance of a song, Songbird by Fleetwood Mac, which they hadn't heard, let alone played, for many years as a request for a birthday celebration. They has researched the song via the internet and Sally delivered it reading the lyric from the phone... and made a pretty good job of it.
After a cracking good set they ended strongly with "Talk Talk Talk about Money" before encoring with Pete Mortons magnificent "Another Train", which was as always perfectly delivered and simply beautiful.
It's always a pleasure to see Sally Barker performing and tonight, ably assisted by the excellent Keith Richard Buck was no exception... a lovely concert delivered by two gifted performers with a wonderful musical rapport... a great night
