Reeves Brothers

REEVES BROTHERS
Musician Pub May 23rd 2023

Wow, we've seen some great performances at The Musician Pub but this one was exceptional... a real blast of authentic old time country and bluegrass delivered by the magnificent The Reeves Brothers all the way from Nevada USA... making their first visit to the UK.

No pretence here... these guys are the real thing, authentic genuine old timey country... the brothers grew up with the music and live it... as one of their songs says "first sound i heard was the whine of a pedal steel guitar" (apologies if the quote isn't verbatim... but it makes the point!). Speaking of the songs... mainly originals ranging from melancholy, through tender to drinking and general good time songs, and everyone a gem. They also dipped into the catalogues of the great Merle Haggard and Glen Campbell as well as paying homage to the Mississippi Blue Yodeller Jimmie Rogers ending with a bluegrass medley including among others. "i've been everywhere" and "the Auctioneer Song"
Absolutely wonderful music delivered by two authentic country musicians... and two incredibly engaging and really good guys
This was a total blast... superb show... longing to see them back, with or without the full band...

Iona Lane

IONA LANE
Musician Pub May 22nd 2023

A real treat for us last night at the The Musician Pub with the visit of a very special talent, Iona Lane.

Iona has a really lovely ethereal voice, plays excellent guitar and enhances the sound with a box controlled by foot to give a lovely droney sound behind the guitar (sadly i have no idea what it is called... but it works perfectly).
The set was mainly original material, beautiful songs crafted with a real feeling for the landscape, nature and history, including a song about 19th century pleantologist Mary Anning, who is believed to be the origin of the tongue twister "she sells seashells..." which Iona managed to sing without hesitation or tripping...
We also got 3 quality covers, covering Sandy Denny, & Joni Mitchell.
This was a simply spellbinding performance by a very talented artist...
Such a tragedy that the Leicester audience stayed away in their droves... they missed a real treat...

John Otway & Wild Willy Barratt

JOHN OTWAY & WILD WILLY BARRAT
Musician Pub May 18th 2023

I love a genuine english eccentric barmpot... and Thursday night the The Musician Pub gave us two for the price of one with the welcome return of the legendary John Otway & Wild Willy Barratt who delivered their customary set of songs and lunacy to a packed audience.

Along with the madness it easy easy to overlook the Musicianship of Willy, who played fiddle and a range of both electric and acoustic guitars as well s the wheelie bin. while John contributed acoustic guitar, theramin and body drums...
The set is primarily original numbers, but it was something of a surprise when a rock/bluegrass introduction heralded a performance of "Two Little Boys"... it has never sounded quite like this before!.
As well as Otway's body drums routine we had the spectacle of Barratt taking a hacksaw and hammer to a guitar... a different kind of show.
Through it all the pair deliver a hugely enjoyable highly professional set of songs and lunacy...
A gig not to be missed... superb nights entertainment

Sandy Denny Project

SANDY DENNY PROJECT
Musician Pub May 14th 2023

We all know and love the songs and voice of the Lady... the late great Sandy Denny don't we ...This Sunday afternoon brought a real treat to The Musician Pub in the form of the wonderful The Sandy Denny Project... 6 musicians with a love of her work... Sally Barker, Marion Fleetwood, Gemma Shirley, PJ Wright, Mat Davies, Mark Stevens... who combine to make a simply wonderful band.

This is not a tribute band, they do not do straight covers of Sandy's music, but interpret the songs to perform them in their own style, but always maintaining the feel and integrity of the song. The performance covers Sandy's career with the Fairports, solo, and even a song left by Sandy but unrecorded by her...
This was a simply wonderful concert... the lions share of the vocals were handled by the wonderful Sally, but Marion, Gemma and PJ also took some lead vocals. Whoever was taking the lead, the vocals were beautiful, the harmonies spot on and the musicianship terrific throughout... this was a simply wonderful performance...and included probably my favourite Sandy song (Fotheringay from Fairport days) and ended, of course, with the magnificent Who Knows Where the Time Goes... just the introductory chords to that have me moist eyed!!!
Fabulous afternoon!!
