Blue Orchid/Echolocation
Musician Pub 3rd December 2023
Second gig of the day, and a good sized audience out again to see Echolcation and the headliners, Blue Orchids
First up were Echolocation... described as "the provisional wing" of the Leicester Music Scene, using spoken word social commentary over a rock band.
First off the rock band really rock... with a powerhouse bass player and drummer driving things and guitarist and synth player adding melody and texture, while Peter barks out the words.
I love music with social commentary... love a good rock band... but.. if i were delivering social commentary i would want to get the audience onside... by talking to the audience between songs... speaking about the message... especially important when the lyrics as delivered are for the most part virtually unintelligible... sorry guys... i know you are working hard and very earnest, but this is not my cup of tea at all
Next up and headlining were Blue Orchid... i had no idea what to really expect from this band.. the blurb referred to a treasure trove of psychedelic visions and head music for post punks, not entirely sure what that means... but i was thinking of a series of long drawn out musical pieces, whereas the reality was more towards the punk end of that description with a raft of short sharp songs.
Musically they were actually damn good... playing with a lot of spirit and energy, again with the driving bass and drums to the fore... The band also included what i think was an electric mandolin (though i stand to be corrected on that) keyboards and the front man delivering vocals and guitar. The songs were generally pretty good and very well played and sung and I really enjoyed the performance, but felt it just needed something more to raise the set from "good" to "great"
