Micell Pfeiffer & Kulesh

MICHELL PFEIFER & KULESH
Musician Pub 3rd September 2023

What an absolutely beautiful afternoon at The Musician Pub today... provided by the wonderful Michell, Pfeiffer & Kulesh.
Last year these artists provided one of the most wonderful and emotional gigs i'd seen and debuted the new trio, performing 3 songs together. Today was our first chance to see a full performance by the trio, as a trio... and it was absolutely wonderful. These are probably the best voices/singers you will see!!
The show started with three solo spot, starting with Daria Kulesh singing a song in her native language, accompanying herself with her shruti box... followed by Odette Michell, performing one of her own songs. Odette writes terrific songs and performs in the style of traditional song. Finally Karen Pfeiffer, in this song acompanying her husband Paul Walker on bass recorder while Paul sang one of his own songs...
A wonderful introduction to the three singers performing solo in their "solo" styles.

DARIA

ODETTE

KAREN

From here on in, we had the trio singing together... accompanying themselves on guitar and accordion (Odette), guitar and shruti box (Daria) and flutes/recorders (Karen).
The first half left me groping for superlatives.. maybe the standout song was the old cossack song (later rehashed by the Seekers as " The Carnival is Over").
The second half however raised the bar to unimaginable heights... i love to see a band who are clearly loving what they are doing, and where performance and songs connect with me on an emotional level.. .and goodness me this did just that... the first one was Daria singing her superb song "The Moon and the Pilot"... knowing the story of this song and considering the goings on in the world now and given Daria's beautifully exquisite performance you cant fail to have been moved... a couple of songs later came "The Peat Bog Soldiers/Moorsoldaten another hugely emotional song.
The concert ended with a song we all know and love... adapted by Pete Seeger from an old piece of Russian writing... the song, "Where have all the flowers gone".
No way were they going to leave without an encore... so they finally ended with "Those were the days"...
These last three mentioned songs were all sung in english, russian and german by the three singers... sung beautifully, the switching of languages creating a sense of unity and worked perfectly.
I love to feel music on an emotional level... to be entranced and be emotionally moved by it ... if you haven't been to a gig and had that powerful feeling you are missing so much... those 4 songs quoted above all totally had me emotionally and having to dry my eyes... if they didnt affect you like that maybe you are dead?...
This gig was wonderful!!
Huge thanks to Odette, Karen and Daria (and Paul) for giving us such a beautiful, emotional, unforgettable afternoon...
And just to crown it... they are all such lovely people!!!
Keep music live... keep music real... support your local venues
