Martin Carthy, Andy Griffiths

MARTIN CARTHY - ANDY GRIFFITHS
Musician Pub July 2nd 2023

OK... most people who know me well will know i have worshipped Martin Carthy, and the Waterson Family, for the best part of 6 decades... so you may expect a bit of bias here...

Tonight at the Musician Pub was a really special night... opening the evening was a local favourite, ANDY GRIFFITHS who delivered a lovely set of his own songs.. outstanding were a new song about the loss of the fishermen in a Scottish fishing town and his closer, asking to enjoy and value what we have now while it is still here... a sentiment we should all follow. It was clear from Andy's smile towards the end that he knew he had delivered a fine set and the audience was all with him.

After a short break, the headliner, MARTIN CARTHY. The term "legend" is often used for people who are from from that... but this man is a living breathing legend... folk music royalty and arguably the finest singer/song interpreter/guitarist we have seen and tonight he delivered the lot... classic folk songs and composed songs, all delivered with a warmth and good humour that were infectious. The voice is obviously now older, but still wholly Carthy... unique and captivating... the guitar playing for the most part fluent as always and totally in empathy with the song... sure, towards the end Martin started a couple of songs which he was unable to finish, stumbled over one or two guitar parts and couldn't call to mind some names he was searching for... but hell, in a 2 hour set, only ended when he was effectively hauled off stage they are minor issues... it was a privilege to be able to see the man perform again and a joy to hear that he fully lived up to my hopes and expectations... a genuinely lovely man delivering a fabulous set.
If i have to make a criticism... maybe the shirt was a bit flamboyant for my tastes...
No two ways about it... a totally wonderful night...
keep music live... keep music real... support your local venue
